Color types
Many of you have heard that image stylists use in their practice the principle of color selection according to the color type. What is it? Different schools take a different approach to this issue. But at the origins of this research was Color me Beautiful.
Specialists of this particular company have developed a world-famous color concept based on seasons.
But she could not accommodate all the variety of types of appearance, and over time, this theory expanded to 12 palettes, and even later - to 24.
This system is based on the theory of Albert Munsell. According to her, 6 dominant color types are distinguished.
All colors have three paired characteristics: hue, saturation, and brightness.
- The tone can be warm or cold.
- Saturation indicates how dark or light a color is.
- Brightness makes it clear how pure or softened the color is, with the addition of gray.
These three characteristics are also in the appearance of a person. One of them is dominant. The second and third characteristics give us additional possible colors.
Thus, 6 dominant color types are distinguished:
Light color type.
Light eyes / light skin / light hair.
Outstanding Representatives:
Cate Blanchett and Claudia Schiffer.
The second characteristic can be either warm or cold. And, accordingly, the third - contrasting or balanced. Depending on the brightness of the appearance.
That is, there are people who are fair, with warm skin tones/warm hair tones, and green eyes. And there are, on the contrary, people whose skin is dominated by a pink tint.
What will be the difference?
The fact that the first are light shades of warm tones (peach, watermelon, golden, apple green).
And the second - light-cold (blue, silver, gray, cold shades of green).
This color type is suitable for combinations of light shades with light, dark with light, but combinations of dark with dark look very bad.
Dark (deep) color type.
The eyes and hair are dark. Skin color - from light to very dark.
Outstanding Representatives:
Audrey Totto, Michelle Obama.
The second characteristic can be either warm or cold.
And the third - balanced or contrast.
Combinations of dark with dark colors, dark with light colors are suitable for this color type, but light shades with light ones look very bad.
Warm color type.
In order for the dominant characteristic to be warm, you need to have red hair and a very warm skin tone (freckles). They can be either light or very dark. Eye color can be absolutely anything.
Outstanding Representatives:
Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman.
We define the second characteristic as contrasting or balanced. If, for example, the eyes and hair are in the same saturation and tone (light red hair and light green eyes), then this is a balanced type.
And if the hair is dark red, and the eyes are light green, then contrast.
The third characteristic is light or dark. For this color type, the main thing is that the palette consists of warm, more saturated colors. Turquoise, watermelon, tomato, marsh, gold.
Cool color type.
Hair platinum (gray), skin tone with a slight pink, eyes of any shade.
Strong Representative:
Judi Dench.
The definition of the second and third characteristics is the same as for the warm color type. For such a color type, the main thing is to use colors from a cold palette: blue, cyan, gray, crimson.
Balanced (Soft) color type.
The most common color type, which looks completely different, depending on the second and third characteristics, and therefore is often incorrectly determined. The main thing to understand is that the shade of hair, eyes and skin should be about the same saturation. (They can't be either very light or very dark.) Appearance looks harmonious, and nothing catches the eye. The white of the eye itself is usually cloudy.
Outstanding Representatives:
Kylie Minogue, Natalia Vodianova, Beyonce.
Often, such an appearance in our country is considered uninteresting and hairdressers want to add brightness by dyeing their hair orange blond or eggplant.
But in fact, you just need to choose the right palette in clothes and makeup in order for this appearance to play.
The second characteristic is determined by the subtone. Determine if it is cold or warm. Such a color type can have ashy hair and blue eyes (cold) or light brown hair and brown eyes (warm).
The third characteristic is light or dark.
For this color type, the colors should be soft, not flashy, so that they do not interrupt the natural harmony.
If the second characteristic is warm, then the colors should be soft, as if through a haze with a warm undertone.
Contrast (Clear) color type.
The eyes are very light, bright, and the hair is very dark. Often found in Ukraine. Sometimes there is a contrast. Very dark eyes and eyebrows combined with blond hair. (This type is often found among Czechs).
Strong Representative:
Kate Middleton.
The second and third characteristics are defined as in the balanced color type.
Pure white is not suitable for anything other than the Contrast Color Type (as well as black and white combinations).
White should be replaced with milk or its shades (with blue, with pink).
Black suits Contrast and Dark only.
Black should be replaced with dark blue, dark brown, dark gray.
It's pretty easy to get lost if you don't have the right skills. This is where a stylist comes in. A professional who distinguishes the slightest shades in the color palette will immediately see how the color is reflected on the face, how it harmonizes with the color of the hair and the color of the eyes. That is why the consultation is carried out in daylight and without makeup. As a rule, there are no difficulties in determining the main characteristic. The client himself in the process of consultation begins to understand what color type he belongs to. But the second and third components, more individual, it is better to show visually. This happens by applying draperies.
Determining a color type from a photo is a strange idea, since the photo could have been taken in warm or cold lighting (daylight, artificial yellow or blue). All this distorts information and the color type is determined incorrectly.
If you want to accurately determine your color type, it is worth going through a consultation on the color analysis of your appearance, where a specialist will drape you in different shades of red, blue, green (warm and cold, bright and muted, dark and light) in daylight.
And the client can independently see how the shades that are wrong for him turn pale, age, make the skin tone yellow or pink, bluish lips, tired eyes, emphasize the double chin and wrinkles.
With the help of drapery scarves (135 different colors), an individual color passport is formed, with which the client feels absolutely confident when shopping.
Initially, it is difficult for an inexperienced person to distinguish whether it is a warm red or a cold one. But over time, the eye begins to distinguish shades and we see that harmonious combinations look more elegant and expensive than those that catch the eye, but do not correspond to the natural color type.
It was a great pleasure to work with Diana Sidorovich. She was sympathetic to my wishes regarding the compressed schedule of classes and, at the same time, she spoke in an accessible and complete way about the basics of the style, not ignoring a single detail. Diana is a tireless professional, completely dedicated to her favorite work, and a very pleasant person to communicate with.
